Description

Sometimes people who have just met start chatting right away. At other times there can be awkward silences or long pauses that feel uncomfortable. To maintain a conversational flow and engage the other person, you may need to transition from small talk to topics that are more focussed or substantial. You can learn to guide the subject, the mood and the flow of a conversation by using a variety of questions and conversation bridges. It should not be to monopolize the talk or to impose your own opinions or beliefs. The goal should be to make the conversation a balanced, two-way interaction. In this course psychologists Eve Ash and Peter Quarry use real conversations to discuss strategies, including using questions and bridges (transition phrases), to guide the conversation and keep it flowing.
